Gallipoli

Coast of Gallipoli

Gallipoli is on the western seaboard of the Salento peninsula. Called the "Pearl of the Ionian Sea", its "old town" occupies a limestone island linked to the mainland by a 17th century bridge. The town, on the Ionian coast of Puglia, facing the Bay of Gallipoli, is famous for the beauty of its string of white beaches, separated by rocky ridges and hidden coves and beaches. The most popular beaches, of international renown, are the Lido Conchiglie, a short distance from Gallipoli, part rocky and part sandy; Rivabella, with its shady pine forest; Baia Verde, 3 km long, characterised by very fine sand; and Punta della Suina, a sandy bay that resembles an exotic location, framed by broad stretches of Mediterranean maquis and Aleppo pine forests, which is part of the "Punta Pizzo Park".
In the old part of the town, facing the island of Sant'Andrea, is the small "Seno della purità" beach, which attracts the locals. Gallipoli also includes a part of the regional nature reserve of Isola di Sant'Andrea e litorale di Punta Pizzo.
