Pompeii

Pompeii, Herculaneum, Torre Annunziata

Ancient city in ruins, Pompeii is the second-most visited site in the entire world. Having been buried beneath the ashes of Vesuvius’s eruption for centuries, the city was actually discovered almost intact. Today it is a singular exemplar of the ways of life in Antiquity. Almost all of the remnants of this famous Roman colony can be visited, and among its treasures, the Villa dei Misteri (Villa of Mysteries) is a private residence entirely frescoed. Even the civil and religious buildings are mostly intact, and also serve to demonstrate Rome’s glorious past. Just a short distance away are Herculaneum, another city preserved by the volcano’s ashes, and Oplontis (Torre Annunziata), where only the villa that belonged (most likely) to Poppaea Sabina – Nero’s second wife – can be toured.
