From Naples' Capo di Chino Airport, visitors con reach the Vesuvian cities of Pompei, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata in less than half an hour. This area - one of the most important Unesco World Heritage Sites worldwide - preserves the remains of the terrible eruption of the Vesuvius volcano in 79 CE. The houses and buildings of Pompei and Herculaneum, thanks to the longstanding archaeological digs, have re- emerged almost intact, with their forums, theatres and baths. Visiting Pompei is a unique experience, like being sucked into a time warp and transported back to Ancient Roman times. Soak up history and walk in the streets dotted with old frescoed tabernae, with their still intact shop counters. Herculaneum, even better preserved by a layer of lava, should not be missed, and the same goes for the other ancient town, Oplontis, the modern Torre Annunziata, where Villa Poppaea has been identified and excavated.

In occasion of Expo Milano 2015, the Italian Government is working to promote the "EXPO and Territories" initiative, a journey in discovery of Italy's hidden treasures and agro-alimentary excellence. "EXPO 2015" explores any and all cultural heritage tied to the initiative.

UNESCO SITE "Archaeological Areas of Pompei, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata"

The reason why people can experience first hand the daily life in ancient Roman times only in Italy, and in the surroundings of Naples, is because the ancient cities in the area have re-emerged, almost intact, from the volcanic eruption that submerged them two thousand years ago. Pompei was literally suffocated by ash and gas, Herculaneum submerged under a layer of mud and lava, and likewise, in part, Torre Annunziata, known in antiquity as Oplontis. In the case of Pompei, this is the reason why archaeologists have discovered a great deal of objects, even garments and food, in a good state of preservation, while an ingenious system has made it possible to reconstruct the shape of the people who died beneath the ash and pumice stone rain during the eruption. Herculaneum, whose monuments are even better preserved, shows the Greek and Roman stratifications in its ancient public and private buildings, while at Oplontis the so-called Villa Poppea still amazes visitors for its frescoes and decorations. These cities are Unesco world heritage sites and visited by thousands of tourists every day.
